Brazil was elected unchallenged as host nation in 2007 after the international football federation, FIFA, decreed that the tournament would be staged in South America for the first time since 1978 in Argentina. The national teams of 31 countries advanced through qualification competitions that began in June 2011 to participate with the host nation Brazil in the final tournament. A total of 64 matches are to be played in twelve cities across Brazil in either new or redeveloped stadiums, with the tournament beginning with a group stage. For the first time at a World Cup Finals, the matches will use goal-line technology.[2] With the host country, all world champion teams since 1930 (Uruguay, Italy, Germany, England, Argentina, France and Spain) have qualified for this competition. Spain is the defending champion, having defeated the Netherlands 1–0 in the 2010 World Cup final to win its first World title. The previous four World Cups staged in South America were all won by South American teams 2018 FIFA World CupЧемпионат мира по футболу 2018 (Chempionat mira po futbolu 2018)[1]2018 FIFA World Cup.svg2018 FIFA World Cup official logoTournament detailsHost countryRussiaDates14 June – 15 JulyTeams32 (from 5 confederations)Venue(s)12 (in 11 host cities)← 20142022 →The 2018 FIFA World Cup will be the 21st FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the men's national teams of the member associations of FIFA. It is scheduled to take place in Russia from 14 June to 15 July 2018,[2] after the country was awarded the hosting rights on 2 December 2010. This will be the first World Cup held in Europe since the 2006 tournament in Germany, and the first ever to be held in Eastern Europe. All of the stadium venues are in European Russia, to keep travel time manageable. The final tournament will involve 32 national teams, which include 31 teams determined through qualifying competitions and the automatically qualified host team. Of the 32 teams, 20 will be making back-to-back appearances following the last tournament in 2014, including defending champions Germany, while Iceland and Panama will both be making their first appearances at a FIFA World Cup. A total of 64 matches will be played in 12 venues located in 11 cities. The final will take place on 15 July at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.[3][4][5] The winners of the World Cup will qualify for the 2021 FIFA Confederations Cup. 2018 FIFA World CupStagesGroup stage Group A Group B Group C Group D Group E Group F Group G Group H Knockout stage FinalGeneral informationQualification Awards Bids Broadcasting rights Controversies Discipline Marketing Mascot Officials Opening ceremony Preparations Seeding Squads Statistics VenuesOfficial symbolsAdidas Telstar 18 (ball) Live It Up (song)[hide] v t e2018 FIFA World Cup finalistsGroup A Egypt Russia Saudi Arabia UruguayGroup C Australia Denmark France PeruGroup E Brazil Costa Rica Serbia SwitzerlandGroup G Belgium England Panama TunisiaGroup B Iran Morocco Portugal SpainGroup D Argentina Croatia Iceland NigeriaGroup F Germany Mexico South Korea SwedenGroup H Colombia Japan Poland Senegal1930 1934 1938 1950 1954 1958 1962 1966 1970 1974 1978 1982 1986 1990 1994 1998 2002 2006 2010 2014 2018[hide] v t e2018 FIFA World Cup stadiumsKaliningrad Stadium (Kaliningrad) Krestovsky Stadium (Saint Petersburg) Luzhniki Stadium (Moscow) Otkritie Arena (Moscow) Kazan Arena (Kazan) Nizhny Novgorod Stadium (Nizhny Novgorod) Cosmos Arena (Samara) Volgograd Arena (Volgograd) Mordovia Arena (Saransk) Rostov Arena (Rostov-on-Don) Fisht Olympic Stadium (Sochi) Central Stadium (Yekaterinburg)[hide] v t eFIFA World CupTournamentsUruguay 1930 Italy 1934 France 1938 Brazil 1950 Switzerland 1954 Sweden 1958 Chile 1962 England 1966 Mexico 1970 West Germany 1974 Argentina 1978 Spain 1982 Mexico 1986 Italy 1990 United States 1994 France 1998 South Korea/Japan 2002 Germany 2006 South Africa 2010 Brazil 2014 Russia 2018 Qatar 2022 2026 2030 2034Qualification1930 1934 1938 1950 1954 1958 1962 1966 1970 1974 1978 1982 1986 1990 1994 1998 2002 2006 2010 2014 2018Finals1930 1934 1938 1950 1954 1958 1962 1966 1970 1974 1978 1982 1986 1990 1994 1998 2002 2006 2010 2014 2018Squads1930 1934 1938 1950 1954 1958 1962 1966 1970 1974 1978 1982 1986 1990 1994 1998 2002 2006 2010 2014 2018Seedings 1998 2002 2006 2010 2014 2018Broadcasters1998 2002 2006 2010 2014 2018Bids2014 2018 and 2022 2026 2030Records and statisticsAll-time table Goalscorers top goalscorers finals goalscorers hat-tricks own goals Penalty shoot-outs Player appearances Red cards Referees Team appearances Teams with no appearancesMiscellaneousAwards Balls Economics Final draw History Hosts Mascots Official films Official songs Organisers Trophy Video gamesNotes: There was no qualification for the 1930 World Cup as places were given by invitation only. The 32 national teams involved in the tournament are required to register a squad of 23 players, including three goalkeepers. Only players in these squads are eligible to take part in the tournament.[1] A provisional list of 35 players per national team was submitted to FIFA by 14 May 2018, one month prior to the opening match of the tournament.[2] The final list of 23 players per national team will be submitted to FIFA by 4 June 2018, 10 days prior to the opening match of the tournament.[2] Teams are permitted to make late replacements in the event of serious injury, at any time up to 24 hours before their first game.[1] The age listed for each player is on 14 June 2018, the first day of the tournament. The number of caps and goals listed for each player does not include any matches played after the start of 2018 FIFA World Cup. The club listed is the club for which the player last played a competitive match prior to the tournament. The nationality for each club reflects the national association (not the league) to which the club is affiliated. A flag is included for coaches that are of a different nationality than the national team for which they manage.
